Sugar Sabotage: One of the most destructive dietary habits in a person’s life is the consumption of sugar! Sugar is not perceived as a threat because we are brainwashed by marketing gurus that it is a normal part of our diet. We should be eating to supply our body with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytonutrients to support optimal health. Food that tastes good should be a byproduct of our careful preparation and not the product of high sugar content.
Not monitoring your sugar intake leads to a whole chain of events that impairs your overall health. Food loaded with refined sugar and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) does not serve our bodies well and actually blocks absorption of some nutrients. Vitamin C is absorbed via the same pathway as sugar and can be blocked by a high sugar diet. Conversely, an orange which contains vitamin c and sugar provides a synergistic route of absorption and both are absorbed well because of the grand design of foods in their natural state. The only way we were ever meant to ingest sugar is through whole fruits, vegetables and grains. Our bodies organs were designed for this but not the quick burst of energy provided by refined sugars and carbohydrates. This stresses our entire system and specifically the pancreas, adrenals and digestive system. Sugar also is a major cause of inflammation in our body. Evidence of this inflammation is seen as obesity, heart disease, increased cholesterol, a rise in triglycerides, arthritis, emphysema and cancers. Excessive sugar consumption is seen in the brain as symptoms such as depression, alzheimer’s disease, weakened eyesight, headaches and migraines. These symptoms all lead up to the more devastating and usually lifelong chronic sugar related diseases as hypoglycemia and diabetes. These both can be cured if a raw, whole foods lifestyle is adopted by a person but it usually takes a 180 in thought for someone to completely change the habits that have gotten them here in the first place.
I thought this is a timely topic since the holidays are upon us and for many this means a 5-10 lb. weight gain over the course of the next month and a half, much of which can be blamed on our increased sugar consumption over the holidays. To combat this syndrome, deprivation is not necessary, but some mental organization is wise. For some, the next month is a constant party. If you have 1, 2 or even 3 parties each weekend. To prevent the extra weight gain, think portion control. Have dinner, dessert and a cocktail but cut down. If you have more than one party a day or weekend, have dinner at one, dessert at another and a cocktail at another. Eating hors d’oeuvres that are higher in protein and nutrients might be a better idea than packing in the sugary treats. People usually have a cheese platter, fruit or cru d’états with veggies and a dip, a perfect alternative to cookies, cake and many drinks, all with high sugar contents and empty calories. Buzz kill, you say, not at all. Stepping on the scale on January 1, will be a bigger buzz kill if you go for broke!
Healthy Holiday Primary Food: Holiday get togethers can be a great source of primary food, but many of us don’t allow that and regard them as a time for confrontation with family members. First let me explain what primary food is. It is all the other nutrition that life provides us without the eating. For instance, a fulfilling career, loving relationships including spouses, family members and friends, hobbies, and spirituality can all add to our optimum life and health if they are inspiring and fulfilling. So this year when the relatives start with the habits that irk you, embrace their idiosyncrasies’ and cherish their presence. Life is so short and we should appreciate the ones we love and the few times we get to see them. Let the dysfunction be a way to see that we are all individuals and if not for individuality, life would be boring. Think about it, what if we were all perfect according to our own model? 10 minutes of that and we would be looking for some more alcohol!
Food in Fashion: If you are eating seasonally, you have already realized that it is time to eat the tiny but mighty Brussels sprouts. Each Brussels sprouts might be small but is a powerhouse of nutrition. They are very high in vitamin A, C, K, folate and manganese and have over 10% of the RDA in 14 other vitamins and minerals. They also top the cruciferous family in the cancer protective compound, glucosinolate and include 4 different glucosinolates which are: sinigrin, gluconasturtiian, glucobrassicin, and glucoraphanin. According to research, this specific combination provides special cancer protective attributes. Brussels sprouts also serve to lower cholesterol, which is amplified when they are steamed.
Mom’s Brussels Sprouts
1 lb. Brussels sprouts cleaned and steamed
1 large coarsely diced onion
¼ cup pine nuts (pignolias)
2 tbsp. butter (or optional olive oil or coconut oil)
Salt
Pepper
Melt butter (or use optional oils) and sauté onions until they are clear or slightly brown. After steaming Brussels sprouts, cut in half and add to pan along with pine nuts and salt and pepper to taste. This can be made ahead of time for Thanksgiving or Christmas as it is easy to reheat.

Acid vs Alkaline and the Link a Highly Acidic Diet Will Have on Cancer, Candida and Osteoporosis

ACIDIC VS ALKALIZING
Most people in the Western world are eating sodium-rich /potassium-poor
diets, and on top of that 40% of Americans are deficient in magnesium.
These shortages of potassium and magnesium in our diets eventually
lead to intracellular depletion of them as well. In this state, the cell’s
voltage-gated sodium channels cease to function properly, causing
potassium to leak from the cells, while filling up with sodium and excess
water. This process causes edema (or swelling) of the cells, crippling
them and preventing them from functioning normally. The result is a
low-energy state in the body and the collapse of the normal cell mem-
brane’s electric charge, (this charge regulates the interior and exterior
of the cell).
This is important because without an adequate electrical charge, the cell
can’t open and close to let oxygen and nutrients in, and waste or toxins
out, creating an acidic environment for your cells.
Acidic cells mean acidic bodies, acidic bodies is a precursor for disease.
Some signs of excess acidity of the body will include fatigue, aches and
pains. Acidosis is especially problematic because it interferes with healthy
cell functions, an example of this is in the production of white blood cells
which are essential for a strong immune system. Poor quality white blood
cells are produced in an acidic environment, making it easy for infections
to take hold.

In 1931, scientist Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize when he discovered
that cancer cells are created when normal cells convert from utilizing
oxygen in the blood for energy, into cells which create their own energy
by fermenting blood sugars. The theory is that due to eating diets high
in the 4 major acid forming foods of meat, dairy, soda and sugar, there
is a low oxygen level in the blood which forces cells to make this change
in order to survive.
During a lecture he stated that “Cancer, above all other diseases, has
countless secondary causes. But there is only one prime cause and that
is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by
the fermentation of sugar.”
When consuming the standard American diet we are setting ourselves
up by creating an ideal environment for cancer to grow as well as opening
the door to osteoporosis-Read below for more on this.
The pH scale runs from 1-14, with 7 being in the middle, or balanced. You
can test your pH level with litmus strips that can be purchased from health
food stores or online, which can be used to test your urine or saliva, and
are an accurate measure of what is going on in your body.
A score below 6.5 indicates acidity. If you have cancer, your goal is to
have your pH level testing around 7.4. The quickest way to change your pH
score would be to stop your consumption of processed foods, meats, dairy,
sugars, sodas, etc. and begin eating meals that consist of fresh fruits and
vegetables and foods from the alkalizing food list below, as well as begin
juicing raw greens everyday

(Soda’s have a very low pH, with nothing scoring above a 3. They contain
phosphoric acid, which is not only bad for your teeth, but also terrible for
bone health, promoting a chronic deterioration of the skeletal system)

Adding omega-3’s to your diet and cutting back on omega-6 fats will also
help with cell function and their ability to process oxygen. This was discussed
in the section Omega 3 / omega 6 but to summarize, a healthy cell
is is made up of omega 3 fatty acids which allows oxygen and nutrients to
cross the cell wall easily. A rigid, unhealthy cell wall is made up of unhealthy
fats which does not allow for the transfer of nutrients and oxygen to cross
the cell wall.

Notice that even acidic fruits like lemons, limes, grapefruits and tomatoes
will have an alkalizing effect on the body.

ACID DIETS, CANDIDA (yeast overgrowth) and Cancer
The problem with having a Candida Albicans infection is that these yeasts
spread everywhere, they might start off in your gut, but they soon pass
into the blood stream, and then set up camp throughout the body.
They are anaerobes -they don’t use oxygen to metabolize and survive,
and they create an alcohol by-product which further increases acidity of
the body. It is in these acidic, oxygen-lacking conditions in which mico-
organicsm like viruses, parasites and cancer will thrive.
Doug Kaufmann, an author and expert on nutrition, has studied yeast
infections and candida for over 30 years, claims there is a strong link to
candida overgrowth and cancer.
Kaufmann’s work demonstrates that fungi in foods, as well as the overuse
of antibiotics (which kills off beneficial intestinal flora) will lead to candida/
yeast/fungus overgrowth in the intestinal tract. This compromises health
in many ways, and shockingly, this imbalance of intestinal flora can be found
in varying degrees in 90% of the American population.
As proof of his research, he devised a diet based on the widely examined
problem of mycotoxin (fungal-type toxins) contamination of the grains we
eat. By eliminating them from diets he was able to change the chemistry
of the body and eliminate the threat of disease. This even included children
with documented cases of leukemia, who had their disease vanish after
changes in their diets which included eliminating fungal-containing foods.
It seems that a systematic fungal infection of the blood can closely resemble
a leukemic condition and doctors who are not trained in this may easily
confuse the two.
Since cancer and yeast infection have been linked, by simply changing what
you eat and drink you can adjust your pH levels, and that can help get your
candida under control. Limiting your exposure to fungal-containing foods is
is the first step.

Dr Tullio Simoncini
Taking this one step further, Doug Kaufmann interviews an Italian doctor
named Tullio Simoncini, who believes that cancer actually is a fungus.
He says that one way to kill a fungus is by the use of sodium bicarbonate de-
livered through a catheter. He explains his theories, as well as shows his
bicarbonate therapy in action in the following links. There are also 2 links
related to the molasses/ sodium bicarbonate cure which can be used from
home. This was also suggested by Dr Simoncini.

ALKALIZING DIET FOR CANDIDA OVERGROWTH
Limiting your consumption of meat, sugar, white flour and grains such as
corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, and peanuts as they are commonly contaminated
with fungal poisons, or “mycotoxins.” (fungal-type toxins). Aflatoxin, which is
commonly found in peanuts, happens to be one of the most carcinogenic sub-
stances in our food supply. Limiting consumption of refined foods and eating
as much nonprocessed foods which includes vegetables and lean proteins.

All meats preferable range-fed and hormone-free, eggs with the yolks, dairy
products which include plain cultured yogurt and butter-both preferably coming
from grassfed animals, if you have a source of raw milk or goats milk they are
fine, vegetables (except for potatoes, yams, peas and beans), bottled or filtered
water, herb tea, oats, brown rice, sour dough bread, quinoa, millet, amaranth,
seeds, all nuts except peanuts and pistachios, and expeller pressed oils including
olive oil and coconut oils.

fruits with the exception of those mentioned above, dried fruits, breaded or
deep-fried meats, potatoes, yams, beans and peas, white bread, wheat, corn,
all yeast products including breads, mushrooms, pastry and alcoholic beverages,
grain vinegar, pickles, salad dressings, green olives, peanuts and peanut
products, pistachios, conventional milk products.
Oil of oregano for candida:
Oil of oregano has several phenols in it that does the work of killing yeasts,
fungi, and molds. Carvarcol is the antiviral, antifungal phenol that is the most
effective. It is also an antibacterial and anti-parasitic. It can kill the Candida
Albicans yeast, as well as Aspergillus mold, E. coli, and Staphylococcus. It
can also help to boost your immune system. You can purchase oil of oregano
for candida treatment at most health food stores. It can also be used to treat
yeast infections of the skin which include ringworm, athletes foot and toe fungus.
Because it is potent, you must dilute it with extra virgin olive oil or coconut
oil to be able to apply it directly to sensitive areas of the skin. Mix five to
ten drops with one teaspoon of olive or coconut oil.
Other ways to treat candida
Including probiotics to increase the beneficial intestinal flora, or add 1 T raw
apple cider vinegar per 8 oz of water, 1 tsp aluminum free baking soda in
1 8 oz glass of water (limit to 1 per day), eating 2 cloves of garlic- crush
them and let them sit for 5 minutes before eating them helps to release
the allicin from the cells of the garlic, the product Threelac is another
remedy for candida.
Self test for Candida
Have a glass of water next to your bed so that first thing in the morning
you can spit into it. Check the water after 2-3 minutes, then within every
15 minutes. If you have a candida yeast infection, you will see string-like
cloudy legs traveling down into the water from the saliva floating on the
top. If there are no strings, and the water is as clear, or the saliva is still
floating after at least one hour, you are probably candida-free. The more
strings and cloudiness there is and the faster it develops, the greater the
overgrowth.
THE ACIDIC EFFECT OF EATING DIETS HIGH IN DAIRY AND MEAT
AND THEIR LINK TO OSTEOPOROSIS
Many people mistakenly believe that meat should be their main source of
protein, and milk as their main source of calcium, however this is not true.
There are many sources of non-dairy calcium which are listed below.
The United States has long pushed dairy products as the primary source
of calcium, but oddly enough it is the people of the United States and other
countries with high dairy intakes who have the highest rate of osteoporosis,
hip fractures, and other debilitating diseases which accompany diets high
in meat and dairy. For example, dairy consumption is rare in China and so
is osteoporosis. However, this is changing as the diets in China are
becoming more “westernized.”
The theory is that eating a diet high in animal protein; whether it is meat,
milk or dairy products, will cause the blood and body tissues to become
acidic. The body counteracts this acidic state by leaching calcium and other
minerals from your bones in order to neutralize the excess acid in the blood,
it is this leaching process which is the leading cause of osteoporosis, not any
lack of dairy in the diet.
Non- dairy sources of calcium include:
- canned sardines
- canned salmon
- dark green leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens
- blueberries
- broccoli
- turnips
- rhubarb
- okra
- dried beans
- tofu
- sesame seeds
- figs
- black eyed peas
- blackstrap molasses
- almonds
Collard greens — 178 mg calcium per half cup
Okra — one-half cup cooked has 90 mg
Kale — 1 cup raw has about 90 mg
Dried figs — 5 have about 68 mg
Orange — 1 medium = 52 mg
Blackberries — 1 cup = 42 mg
Why you should not take a calcium supplement
Calcium works in conjunction with various parts of the body to help control the pace
of your heart, allows nutrients to move in and out of the cells in the body, and plays
a crucial role in nerve function and muscle function. Calcium is even known to lower
cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Most calcium supplements are made from either
calcium carbonate or calcium citrate. Both of which are difficult for the body to utilize,
and carry side effects with excessive use such creating other mineral deficiencies
and imbalances that will increase your risk of heart disease, kidney stones, gallstones,
osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Read this next link on

requirments from food sources.

What to do for strong bones
Eat a diet of fresh, raw, whole foods which are rich in minerals, giving your body the
materials that it needs to be healthy. Some dietary suggestions include:
1) eating and juicing leafy green vegetables and wheatgrass
2) include organic pasture-raised meats and eggs which are higher in omega 3 fatty acids.
3) Raw milk from pasture-raised animals-very different from conventional dairy
4) Eat foods high in silica- cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, horsetail, nettles.
5) Eat foods high in magnesium-raw cacoa, oat bran, flax seeds, brazil nuts, almonds,
cashews, sesame seeds, squash, pumpkin are good sources.
6) Use unprocessed sea salt which provides the trace minerals.
7) Limit fructose to less than 25 grams per day.
Optimize vitamin D levels from sunlight or supplement, nearly everyone is deficient
9) Vitamin K2 - helps bind calcium with bone. Found in leafy greens, fermented foods,
raw cheese or K2 supplement. Most people are deficient.
10) Weight-bearing excecise regularly
11) Minimize sugar and refined grains.
12) Avoid low fat diets
13) Take a high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement
14) Make sure you are getting enough sleep each night.
ALKALIZING DRINKING WATER
The use of reverse osmosis and distillers for water purification will remove
chlorine, fluoride, pesticides and other harmful by-products from your water,
but they will also remove the essential minerals as well, thus making it more
acidic. In order for your body to balance this water, minerals will be pulled
from your system. Therefore, adding minerals back into this water is essential.
This can be easily done in the following ways.
1) you can add 1 tsp of Himalayan sea salt per gallon of water. This salt
contains 84 trace minerals that your body will use. Store in a glass pitcher
in the fridge.
2) adding a splash of raw apple cider vinegar to water and small amount
of raw honey (if needed)to balance the flavors of the ACV, will add some
minerals back.
3) add 1 tsp of sea salt, and the juice of 1 lemon to each gallon of water,
store in glass pitcher in the fridge.
4) using non-aluminum baking soda, add 1/2 tsp to a gallon of water and
shake vigorously. Test with a pH strip and add more baking soda until the
water registers at between 8.5 or 9. Once you have figured out the
correct ratio it will be easy to follow this same recipe again and again.

Home Strategies
Whatever your food choices may be, being aware that what you are
consuming has a direct impact on the chemistry of your blood may help
you to make better choices.
Limit your consumption of meat, sugar and milk products, work at
oxygenating the blood by movement, exercise, deep breathing and
diet. Consume more fresh fruits and vegetables, and their juices to
reduce acidic state of body.
Recognize the problem of candida and take appropriate steps to elim-
inate the yeasts from your body.
Eat foods rich in calcium, magnesium and supplement with D3 in K2
if you are deficient. Try to get 20 minutes per day of unprotected sun
exposure.
